Crittenton Women’s Union transforms the course of low-income women’s lives so that they can attain economic independence and create better futures for themselves and their families. CWU provides safe housing, caring supports, education, and training programs along with innovative new programmatic designs based on research and client experience. We use this knowledge and experience to shape public policy.

Career Family Opportunity Intern

Career Family Opportunity (CFO) is an innovative pilot program developed by CWU to provide intensive supportive services over 60 months to 20 low income public housing residents to assist in their journey towards economic independence. The program offers peer support, group training and education, as well as intensive individual mentoring.

Position Description: The CFO Intern will assist the Mobility Mentors and Coordinator in gathering information and working with the participants as they undertake their goal setting process. Intern will also work with the Affinity Groups and Community Group which are made up of participants by preparing materials, assisting with agendas, and participant outreach. Opportunity to learn the network of services in the South Boston neighborhood and to be part of the start up of a new and results oriented program.
 
Knowledge and Skills Required:
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Case management experience preferred
Shifts Available: 10 hours weekly, times are flexible

Horizons Housing Program Intern

Horizons, a domestic violence transitional housing program, is looking for an intern who is dedicated to assisting women and their families escape domestic violence and begin the road to self-sufficiency.

Intern Duties:

  • Some office work including filing;
  • Case Management including working one on one with clients and their children to help connect them to appropriate services and address their specific needs;
  • Assisting in the play room with children as needed; and
  • Assisting with calling housing authorities for follow up with clients.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Intern should possess knowledge of domestic violence learned either through coursework or prior experience;
  • Case Management skills including ability to work with clients within appropriate boundaries and limit setting;
  • Child Care knowledge and experience; and
  • Ability to perform in a team setting.
Shifts Available: Monday-Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM (flexible)

Administrative Intern for AVP of Housing

CWU Administration has a great opportunity for a fall intern to assist with the development of the organization's Continuity of Operations Plan's procedures and policies (emergency preparedness). This involves gathering information and data from a variety of sources both internal and external to the organization. Talking with community organizations and gathering information related to external resources. The candidate must be able to work in a collaborative and team environment and demonstrate responsibility to complete assigned tasks.

Specific duties include

  • Help complete the Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP)
  • Assist with development of binders, logs, and other emergency communication documents necessary to have a comprehensive and effective COOP.
  • Interacting and connecting with local community organizations, transportation systems, and other identified entities needed to support the COOP.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite; Word, Excel, and Power Point
  • Ability to work in a professional office environment
  • Ability to take direction, work with others and demonstrate initiative
  • Organizational skills
  • Experience working with diverse populations
Shifts Available: Minimum of 20 hours a week, times are flexible.

The Hastings House transitional shelter in Brighton offers transitional housing and comprehensive services to promote self-sufficiency for 62 homeless families.
 
Position Description:

  • Maintain bulletin boards
Knowledge and Skills Required:
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills

Finance Intern

Intern will receive exposure to a broad range of accounting activity over our fiscal year end (June 30), including Accounts Payable, General Ledger, and Assets, helping the student to evaluate a career in finance and accounting.

Intern duties will include:

  • Daily Cash Management - Prepare deposits from billings and our Development department. Maintain Excel tracking sheet. Post to Accounts Receivable and Cash Receipt Sub Ledgers.
  • Accounts Payable - Learn how to make entries, file invoices and retrieve invoices.
  • General Ledger - Learn how to make entries, and analyze the General Ledger detail for several audit worksheets like pre-paid expenses and accruals.
  • Reconciliation - Reconcile Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable sub legers to the General Ledger.
  • Assets - Help to prepare the assets schedule for asset tracking and calculation of depreciation. Prepare supporting documentation.
  • Other Projects - May include such things as unanticipated analysis and reporting requests as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Computer: General knowledge of Windows Office software.
  • Excellent Excel skills required.
  • Experience with an accounting package is a plus.
Shifts Available: 10 hours weekly, times are flexible.

Marketing/Communications Intern

The Marketing & Communications Department is looking for an intern to work closely with the Director of Marketing & Communications and Marketing & Communications Coordinator, assisting with the organization's efforts to convey a clear and consistent image, to position Crittenton Women's Union as the “go-to” organization for women, and to build positive public recognition and support of Crittenton Women's Union. This is an exciting time to be involved with this forward-looking organization, and an intern would gain valuable experience in the marketing/communications area.
 
Intern duties would include:
  • Research, compose, and post features, event recaps, photos with captions for the Voices Project Blog and social networking sites (i.e Facebook, Twitter, Flickr).
  • Manage social networking sites (Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube) to increase visibility and traffic of CWU.
  • Assist with maintaining and updating CWU's website
  • Distribute press releases and advisories and follow up with media
  • Assist with planning and execution of donor, fundraising and PR events
  • Write newsletter articles, press releases, and other general assignments
  • Interact with departments throughout the organization to gather information about various programs for materials and projects
Knowledge and Skills Required
  • Strong knowledge of web and electronic media
  • Strong writing, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Creativity
  • Research skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to design and effectively utilize social networking technologies.
  • Knowledge of and/or skill in applying web based tools such as tags, social bookmarking, and RSS to enhance CWU's marketing efforts.
  • Basic HTML and Web 2.0 knowledge or skills
  • Experience using Adobe Dreamweaver and Photoshop.

Human Resources Intern

Position Description: The Human Resources Intern will assist the Human Resources Director and Human Resources Generalist in carrying out human resource functions. Will assist with many of the human resource related matters, including, but not limited to: personnel policies and procedures; employee benefits; employee relations; payroll affirmative action; staff orientation and training. The goal of the internship is to learn general office administrative processes of the human resources department. This will be accomplished by the following tasks: reviewing and auditing personnel files, Assist with training preparations; participate in preparing for new-employee orientation and packets; Update job descriptions; assists with position data clean-up.

Knowledge and Skills Required: We are looking for someone who is currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Business or Communications with a focus in Human Resource Management. The candidate must have excellent communication skills and computer proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

Institutional Advancement Intern

The Crittenton Women's Union Institutional Advancement (IA) Department is seeking an intern for the spring 2010 term. The IA Intern will be an important part of the CWU IA Team, providing support for the many fundraising responsibilities of the department.

Intern duties would include:

  • Assisting with the coordination and implementation of the CWU's Events
  • Assisting with grant prospect research
  • Assisting with fundraising database (Raiser's Edge) entry as needed – training will be available
  • Draft acknowledgements of corporate and foundation grants
  • Assisting in projects that arise throughout the semester
  • Overall support of the general operation of the IA Team
Knowledge and Skills Required:
  • A strong interest in Crittenton Women's Union's efforts to help poor women become financially self-sufficient
  • Ability to work well independently, and also as part of a team
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Initiative and ability to follow-through on all assigned tasks and attention to detail
  • Timeliness and professionalism
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Internet
  • Research and project management experience a plus
